You can tell that the book has mystery and suspense through the the pictures like the picture were they all are looking towards the water tower.
You can notice that Bubba and Spike have friendship throughout the text.

  2. in the book the iris is everywhere so then a idea pop into my head and then i thought the iris must mean that they have a water company because in one page i saw the man wearing the uniform.

  3. There is a paranormal theme in the book because in the book the people have white pupiles and a iris on the hand.

  4. in the book there is mystery and it's hard to understand what the book is about the author just leaves you with suspense thinking and wondering what has happened (example)
the part that leaves me in suspense is when everybody look towards the water tower and i don't get why they have white in the middle of there eye

  5. The iris is always there because like kristian said it could be a water company or everyone knew buba and spike were in the water tower

  6. For me the main theme in this book is mystery. i don't know why there is always an iris i think it must have something to do with the area and maybe it represents their town. i cant seem to figure out what the people are all doing walking towards the water tower. i predict that it might be that the tower falls down but it could be anything.

  7. the kind of themes and techniques the author uses is, mystery and suspense caused by the pictures, because on the pages wen bubba was in the water tower his facial expression looks like he is worried what will happen.

  8. The book water tower shows (mystery and suspense). When there is something nervous or something important the writings is in italic.
    Example
Nobody in Preston could remember when the water tower was built, or who built it but there it stood on Shooters Hill- its iron legs rusted, its egg-shaped tank warped and leaking - casting a long, dark shadow across the valley, across Preston itself.
All of this is righten in italic.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Writing in italic example
All about him the tower creaked and groaned.
That's the heat, hr reasoned. The heat expanding
the metal. There was a smell. That's the algae.
All rotten and festering. The water eddied and
swirled. That's the wind shifting the tower.
    It's old and rickety.
( all of this is righten in italic).

On a page 5,in the picture, green is reflecting off him, which adds tension and a paranormal theme to the page. It also says ghostly wailing which adds to the paranormal theme, plus the gauge tells another story. Plus, why is there a water tower symbol on most of the pages, are the townspeople possessed or some thing, does Bubba get possessed at the end? How does spike not get possessed?

The Author uses heaps of different techniques to show what is happening during different times. He also uses heaps of paranormal activity to make suspense and mystery. He uses the pictures in the book to show what they are feeling and show their body language and if you look carefully in nearly every page there is a symbol which is called the iris.I reckon that the water tower is actually a type of machine/something sent by aliens(or something like that)to posses humans to allow the to enter earth and rule the earth,I also think that the water is possed in the water tower and once you drink it but it only works once you are an adult that's why it doesn't affect the kids but since spike/bubba(i dont know who it is that goes swimming)They get full affected!

There is paranormal and mystery themes in the book because of the supportive pictures and the italics. Body languages and the facial expressions are included for the pictured techniques, and listed as a technique itself.

the themes that were used in the book are paranormal, suspense, mystery and friendship we see these themes in this book as it was read, because of all the facial expression, body language, pictures and font. we see heaps of bold and italic font which is used when the author is trying to leave you with suspense.

    Water tower blog
Our favourite theme is paranormal because that’s what the book’s mainly about. You see every body looking at the water tower, but in the reflection there’s nothing surrounding it. In the images some thing made them look at the water tower but it leaves you in suspense because it doesn’t tell you what it was. A person was carrying a rake and you can see in the reflection there is a rake. In page 24 behind Baba there is another rake. In page 16 you can see Spike running, but near the tree in the corner there is a huge rake and it looks like it’s moving. Looking at the authors perspective maybe something creepy happened in his life and it had to do with a rake!!!

On the 3rd last page it looks like the claw is going to rip out some of bubba's eye. Also, on the second last page when bubba is coming out of the tank it looks like a iris. Ash and i discovered there is an iris on almost ever page in the book.
The author shows paronamal and mystery in the ilistrations so it gives us suspence and thrill when we read this book.
Every person in town (exept for spike and bubba) has there iris torn out. We think that all the people have gone into the watertower when they were all young. Jaiden and i think that bubba's mum is so overpretective because she knows about the watertower and all its mysteries.

The Themes Are Paranormal and weird because of the water tower (blame the water tower) anyway we think that the author's perspective is that he sort of wants to scare the reader.

We think that there might be a creature in the water tower that can possess anyone that drinks the water.

why isn't Spike possessed like Bubba? 

  21. The themes used in the "WaterTower" are most definetly paranormal and mystery, like why do all of the towns people have the white dot in their eyes have they been pesest by something and why do we constantly see the iris everywhere theres just so much mystery. i also really want to know why have we seen the rack like 4 times is that what has pesest the town??? Theres just so many questions...... i would also like to point out that on the last page on bubba's hand there is a tiny iris i now think that he's pesest as well, i also want to point out that on page 26 some of the towns people are looking up at the water tower like they look happy that Bubba is going up into the water tower why are they happy about this??????????????

We think that on the third last page, which has no words at all and just an image of bubba's facial expression and a claw type thing, is the authors way of adding suspense and mystery, as any of the readers could think anything but not knowing what the claw/rake is.
We also discovered that the rake/claw thing is in nearly every page near the end and the iris may be found in almost all pages.
There is also mystery in the book as the author uses a green-ish colour, allowing the readers to think that anything could be wrong with the water.

    :D

  23. OK!!!!!!!!
Ehem, I think that the watertower is where they get all their water supplies, like washing, showers, drinking, toilet, etc. So maybe to get possessed is by geting water on you or something, and thats why Bubba didnt have any wrinkles, because he didnt get raked, because maybe the rake was just there to say "HEY...im a rake" for threatening Bubba, and to also give you the idea that the people were there. And also on the page where theres a GIANT FACE, you can see the rake and 2 lines on the side, thats the symbol with the iris. And also the iris is maybe a "company type of thingy" because you see it on there hats, water sources, but like a weird company, well..I mean...it does possess people, duh.

We think that as soon as bubba got attacked by the claw or whatever it was and we think that it is scary how he just got attacked by the claw and then bubba then just went into the water tower and had an iris on his hand and before he got attacked by the claw he did not want to go in the water tower.

    Ethan:
I think that it is impossible to hold your breath under water for 120 seconds or 2 minutes.

Again, I think that they are a "possessed company" But I looked back on the book and I realised that it says on the first page "Nobody in Preston could remember when the watertower was built" So that means that it a old building, "or who built it" Means that the person who built it was OLD

I agree Connor maybe the water towers water helps it to not break down or so because the water tower is very old so probably the water towers water is not water and is some sort of creature and the water tower is just the creatures home.

      Delete
    2. I believe that is true "CHRIS KAGAMINE". It's seems like a creature is living in the water tower so if they go in the creature could possess that person who entered the tower.

There is themes of paranormal and mystery because the non-spoken pictures and the suspenseful texts.
The author's perspective can be that he is trying to make us wonder and think many things about what could happen and what it would mean.

  32. Raelee and Marjorie.25 June 2013 at 17:44

The author uses many different techniques, to show what is happening in different situations.
Using the body language and facial expressions to show their true emotions.
The author adds more suspense and mystery, by adding onomatopoeia.
    e.g; Bang!
    Crash!
    Clang!
The onomatopoeia shows us the sound effect, but not telling us what is making the noise, letting us think anything about what is making the sound.

In the book beneath the surface, on the page where people are on the beach staring, I think that their looking at the water towers direction and is already possesed beacuse of the beach water, in which is the watertowers water.

Beneath The Surface - In the book, we think that the pictures sometimes don't match the text. For example, when we were discussing about how the pictures could've taken place at a desert, it shows that two men are in a observatory and not in a desert. When Spike was climbing up the fence, it shows a picture of people on the beach instead of him climbing up the fence as the main picture.
Connection; There's an iris in nearly every picture as the same as in The Watertower.

Ever since we read beneath the surface i have been thinking that some one is actually in charge of the water tower and is some how still alive maybe one day the water will fall one day and the whole town will flood and maybe every one will die with the water flowing with blood and nothing left but floating corpses stained with the blood of the people who once lived here staying there until someone after a few years comes and might see that the water tower is back and the town will be popular and the same thing will happen again... hehehe hehehe HEHEHE HAHAHA HHHHAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!

This is basically a rake rant...

    Ok, ehem...
People think that the rake is on the first page disguised as a human but...thats dumb, because imagine a book like this

    THE RAKE
    written by M.C.SHAMALAMALAMALAMALAMALAMA
A horrific story about a blue rake controlling everyone in this town called Preston, it is the scariest book in the world because a single rake made a watertower, water, pipes, a town, and many more!!

That would be really dumb if a rake was controlling everyone.

    WARNING CONTAINS ALOT OF SPOILERS
Spike got possessed at the end because it says
"Which was both his end" He died
"And his beginning" He was reborn as a possessed guy thing

This book is targeted to children from year 4 to 12 because children who are in year 3,2,1 and kindy won't understand the pictures and the storyline.
we think the book is paranormal because there is lots of freaky pages throughout the book eg.

the page with the school. the girl on the left looks really really really really freaky because of her eyes.

we think the author used the paranormal technique because of the 1st book was paranormal and the author wanted to carry on the effect of the paranormal feeling.

we discovered that there are 88 water tower symbols in the whole book:)

  41. The themes in “Beneath the surface” is most definitely mystery as in the book you don’t know some things like why did spike change his name to “Spiro” his he afraid if someone knows who he is they might do something to him? And why did the other hydrologists only let him have one sip from the vile? The techniques the author used to show the theme is in the text like when spike is describing the town and how there was a mist in the town and when he lived in the town there was no mist, I think the mist actually represents that the water tower has spread and that’s why the clerk didn’t want any doctors there in the town. The grammar the author used was , . “” _ ? … and ; . The book is targeted at people who have already read “the water tower” and the age group is around year 3 to year 12.

The themes in the book are mystery suspense Paranormal and strange i think the reason why spike changed his name to Spiro is because he LIKES SPYRO THE DRAGON(JUST KIDDING) I think the real reason why is because he didnt want anyone from his childhood remembering him and trying to get him into trouble or anything like that, I really think that the town ha been possed by the water from the water tower because at the begging when he first came to town the inn/hotel keeper said "you aint here to set up any medic" or something like that then he said "we dont need any here" why would he mention that?
i think spike aw the effect of the water when he went swimming in it and felt some changes in his body then he ran away from the town and changed his name from spike to spiro to forget his history and that way when he was older and went to test the water to see if it posses people nobody would remember him another reason to back up my reason is because of his dream, all the colors were a very dark green just like the water towers color,It looked like he was struggling not to get possessed by the water

The themes in the book is mystery and paranormal Because in the book it show pictures of people with the iris in there eyes and these people are from different places for example the people on the beach had the iris symbol on there eye which makes you think how did they get infected by the water tower wich makes it mystery

The themes used in this book are suspense, paranormal and mystery because of the techniques they use through the detailed text and pictures and uses these things to make the reader and audience think anything of what will happen. The author also uses simple grammar, such as: " ... , ? - ."
He uses these themes and techniques, to lure the readers into the book, letting them imagine anything. We believe that this book is targeted to years 4 - 12 because of the little things that are noticed, and turned out to an intense conversation and maybe younger readers may not understand the book or notice the things that older readers notice.

  45. The themes in the book are paranormal, mystery and suspense because of the techniques that the author uses through out the book. By using different grammar is one of the techniques the author uses, which makes suspense.
Another technique is the pictures, by using detail which makes them look mysterious and paranormal for example:
On the 2nd page when there is a reflection of a person who is unidentified and spike in the light with dark gloomy colours.

  46. bella, brooke and phoebe18 July 2013 at 16:40

We think that it isn’t really mystery anymore its more about finding the answer to the mystery. The book is basically targeted at year 5 and up because it has a meaning to the book and little kids probably wont understanding the pictures and the meaning. If we didn’t have pictures some of the texts wouldn’t be understandable. E.g.
    > Which is both his end and beginning…
    >Why would they do that? He wondered. Unless its to keep the water cold inside, and he shivered, thinking of it. And the dark...
The author uses simple sharp sentences to leave you thinking what’s going to happen next. The author puts lots of commas so we think about what we just read.
