Home

As a reading group activity we would like you to re read the story Home by Narelle Oliver and respond to the following question.

In this story the author compares built landscapes with the birds natural environments.

Explain what this means and find evidence of this in the story using quotes and page numbers.

How would you interpet the story if it had no pictures? Why?

What do you think the theme of the story "Home" is?

Can you think of any other examples where this theme is evident in our world?

When blogging you must

1. Include your name (no nicknames).

2. Respond in detail.

3. Answer all elements of the question.

4. When you have finished read other student's posts and provide a constructive comment or question.

Happy Blogging!

  2. Hi Year 6,
I have just read some comments posted from last week.
A few tips when responding to these questions:

    1. Be specific - if you are making a comment about how the pictures add to the story please use specific examples from the book (include page numbers if you can).

    2. If you are responding to someone else's post you need to agree or disagree and then either add to their response or offer your ideas with supporting evidence.

    * This particular focus question looks closely at the authors use of language so it might be helpful to quote directly from the book. For example:

"They follow the river thats winds like a glittering snake far below" (page 4)
I like the way the author used similes here to describe the river... etc.

    Have fun!!

  6. this story was based on a real story of falcons.

    1. i agree with navreet if there was no pictures because the falcon described human things from their natural environment.
e.g hot air balloon with a big bird and the falcon thought it was a gigantic bird ready to attak

  7. i believe the author compared landscapes with the birds natural environments because that is probably what the falcons think, because they dont know human things. e.g the falcon thought a boy was a blue animal also towers as cliffs. shiny beasts chase each other (cars).

  8. i liked the part in the story was when the
male falcon gets scared of the balloon.
(something looms large in the skye , blocking the sunlight, the falcon senses danger.a gigantic bird hovers above him. it is watching-ready to attack.)(page 10-11 )

  9. What do you think the theme of the story "Home" is?
i think the theme of the story is home because the falcons where trying to find a new home.

  11. the male falcon spend whole day finding food and when he gets home the female falcon has given a egg so that means that the male falcon has to go back and find more food for the baby falcon.( on the last page)

  12. This Book is amazing based on a true story and telling us how much we have built over the years through the forest.

We think that the pictures help the story because if you just read the story by itself with no pictures it would not make any sense whatsoever, e.g.

    "creatures with many legs" canoes
"blue animal flashes up out of the shadows squealing" A boy on swing set
"towering cliffs that gleam like water" sky scraper with shiny windows

if you read theses quotes without the pictures you can only imagine it has a forest not in the city.

I loved the book because it had very good art and has a very good story and how its a true story and also how birds are not smart enough to know there own kind meaning they don't know what is a bird and what is not.

If the book had no pictures we would think that they were just moving into a different forest because there saying as if theres mountains and rivers instead of buildings and cars. The birds see different things, but they explain it as if there still living where they used to.Shimmering rivers- to windows and buildings.

  17. It was a interesting book cause of the pictures are awesome. I am usually not into books like this and i believe that it has very fasanating pictures and a storyline. The thing i did not like is that it had no action or comedy stuff in it. This bird story also disapointed me cause it got boring i only like books with comedy and action thanks

  18. i loved how how the author written the story by the birds point of view

    for example...

    "creatures with many legs" canoes
"blue animal flashes up out of the shadows squealing" A boy on swing set
"towering cliffs that gleam like water" sky scraper with shiny windows
"a big bird on a hot air balloon" a giant bird ready to attack the bird

if there were no pictures i'm positively sure that i wont understand the story line i wont know what the creature with many legs is or even towering cliffs that gleam like water so the pictures are very inportant.

  20. WHY BIRDS AND NOT DINOSAURS OR RABBITS OR DOGS I DON'T REALLY LIKE BIRDS

    ReplyDelete
  21. why did the author use the point of view from the birds and not from himself

    ReplyDelete
  22. i agree what ash and jaiden said

what if the picture book was very long and it had more stuff of the birds point of view and maybe the pictures didn't give out that much detail?

If the book had no pictures i wouldnt understand stuff because id be like what the hell is a monster with many legs is it a dinosaur oh and if the book had it in humans view it would be like a tall building,The falcon goes there to lay there nest and anyway What the hell is slenderman doing in page 19 in the far right corner? is this the forest were slenderman is????? Id like it better with dogs or pokemon XDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD <(0.0)>....................................

We believe that, if there weren't any pictures, this book wouldn't make any sense, as the author used the falcon's point of view
for example: our "canoes" for them, are "creatures with many legs."
The hot air balloon is referred to them as "a gigantic bird."
it shows us that the falcons don't know what human things are and if the pictures were gone, it would just seem like a book about falcons moving to another bushland.

We both agree that the author uses personification like: The sun woke the day.

we also like the pictures and you constantly see the creature descized as something on the beach. we enjoyed this book
