  4. I feel very sad because nearly all the members are forced to fight in war. I was also sad when the council was going to cut down the tree because each leaf of the tree represents a close friend who fought in war long ago.

    3. I agree.
The leaf shows someone at the beginning who suffers.

  5. When i read Memorial by Gary Crew and Shaun Tan for the first time I did not get the meaning behind the book. Then when I read it again I started to get that meaning. Now that I finally have read it for the third or fourth time I get it. Overall Memorial is one of those books that you have to read a few times to get the story.

  8. This story reminds me of the quote Yasser Arafat made ,I come bearing an olive branch in one hand and in the other a freedom fighter's gun don't let the olive branch fall from my hand.

  9. I was sad because they cut down the tree.It is very lucky that three generations all survived the world wars.It would be sad to be in war and see your friends be killed. At the end of the book when the boy is counting the layers it also shows how many years his family has been in war.

  10. Brilliant responses from this group.

I am interested to read other people's feelings about the story as they read it. See if you can think of other feelings. Was there a time that you laughed or felt angry perhaps.

I love how people are adding to other people's posts. Just make sure you aren't repeating what they say and you are providing more to their statement.

    Keep up the good work
    You are awesome!

  11. the emotions i felt...........
i felt sad when the tree got cut down because it was a big tree and and it had a lot of memories to great grandpa and grandpa.
the emotions that great grandpa had was also sad because when ever people in his family talk about the tree he always is crying and because he is old he blames it on the sun just because he does not want everyone to know he is sad about the tree getting cut down.

  12. Book:Memorial
    Written By:Gary Crew
    Illustrated By:Shaun Tan

Great Grand pa was really emotional when he talks about his past in the war,So my connection
that i get really emotional when i talk about my past (sad past) and just like the great grand pa i usually blame it on people or things.
This book is a great book for showing the characters emotion's throughout the ENTIRE BOOK!!!

  13. I felt depressed when the tree got cut down because it meant a lot to Old Grandpa. It meant a lot to Old Grandpa because all the leaves on that tree represented all of those people that died in the war. Its not easy to forget something that you have lost. On the other hand i felt relieved that Old Grandpa survived in the war.

  16. Memorial

I didn't get the book at first but because the book dosent really tell who is telling the story so you have to read it 2 or 3 times then you get a good understanding of the of the book because some things that the characters say have a intense meaning to it .

  17. i felt sad for the whole family who didnt want the tree to be cut down. it meant alot to everyone because the leaves represented the people who died in the war and if they cut down the tree then all the memories will be gone and that is why i think the book is called "memorial".

  18. It was really sad when they had to make a choice between taking down the statue or the tree. Well, they chose the tree and it shouldn't have been cut down because it was a memorial which represented the people who have died for us. I also thought that the boy suffered a defeat because he tried to save the tree by fighting the council, but he was too late.

  19. Memorial

but most of all i learnt about the war and family generations . it was a nice book to read

  20. To read Memorial you really need to infer things that are hidden in the book.

It was really sad that they had to cut down one or the other, mostly because both of them resembled the war and they were both memorials, if the council had a problem with something as important as a memorial then they should just fix it.

It was also confusing that many people started talking at different times because you think that its the same person.

  21. i think its good that they hold a memorial service for an zac day at the statue then its sad for greand pa because he remembers the past and starts to cry and then he said its the sun its to bright for an old man like me
